We had a productive meeting discussing possible research projects for CACity:
- Digital project
Mapping cinematic cities in architecture-film critical literature: an interactive database based on bibliographical research.
This project will focus on providing open source information to researchers and the general public, about certain cities in all-Ireland through their cinematic representations (location films) and the critical literature around it. It will also provide information about (historical) cinemas and cinema-going in these cities. The data will probably be available via a website and an app. Dr Gul Kacmaz Erk has volunteered to lead this project that will be conducted in collaboration with QUB Computer Science.
- Film industry and urban development in Belfast and beyond
The focus of this project is on the influence of the fast-developing film industry in Belfast (and elsewhere) on urban renewal projects. With several new film studios, national and international TV series and film projects, Belfast is a contemporary urban platform to study in terms of economics, planning, and architecture. Stefano Baschiera (Film Studies) has kindly volunteered to lead this project.
- Film and divided cities
This project, which will explore divided cities through their films, has emerged after our initial meeting in spring. Several group members are interested in divided cities and it is only natural to start to consider such a project, preferably in collaboration with other groups/institutions at QUB.
- Urban film-making workshop in Belfast
The city behind the camera: filmmaking as a creative tool for urban representation. This is our practice-based project, in which participants will make short films in and about Belfast within a week. It will be open to all and the films will be screened and reviewed by experts at our final event in June.
Please feel free to propose other projects. They may generate their own team within CACity research group, or become part of one of the projects above.
6 pm. CACity film screening: My Uncle (Jacques Tati, 1958)
Introduced by Dr Gul Kacmaz Erk
