We had a great discussion on our work on 'cinema and architecture in the city' including the Belfast prototype Lorraine brought to life. Many thanks to Cliona, Laura, Rory, and Sam for their 5-minute presentations on their work related to cacity.

We were privileged to have film scholar Dr Mark Shiel (Kings's College London) as our keynote speaker and guest of the round table. We bombarded him with our questions about his work. At the QFT, Screen 2, Mark talked about Century City, which will be in his next book on Los Angeles and motion pictures, with a focus on the 1960s and 70s. Century City is one of the largest shopping malls in LA, near Beverly Hills, and built in the mid 1960s on the site of the former 20th Century Fox studios back lot. Mark's interpretation of this famous movie location was very interesting; through 4 different films (fiction, documentary, and even LAPD footage), he discussed the use of 'real' architectural space as film set as well as the artificiality of the mall/office complex detached from the city itself.

Also, Dr Gul Kacmaz Erk gave talks on film and architecture in Istanbul last week. The talk was entitled Film Architecture: Cinematic Narration through Spatial Concepts, and Gul spoke at Istanbul Technical University, Kadir Has University and Beykent University. The aim of this visit was to increase the awareness of CACity (Cinema and Architecture in the City) as an area of research in the humanities.
